Should community care be incorporated into Nigeria health care practice?

Posted by Flourish Itulua-Abumere on June 18, 2013 at 6:50 AM

Community care is care delivered to you anywhere you are instead of been cared for in the traditional hospital setting. So you can treated at home or in the nursing home. Can this work in Nigeria? Should it be encouraged in our health care sytem? Will this be cost effective? what will be the weakness and strengths?

I think its a good plan but the weakness will overweight the strengths if staffs are incompetent as we see them in Nigerian hospitals today

I support community care initiative in Nigeria but will it be free? Only when its free that it will be meaningful. Else, it will like there were more damage to the public

I wish this comments could get to Mr President, let him hear how we citizens of Nigeria so much, desperately need an improved emergency and health care system. People die every day because of misplaced priorities to health care.

In 2011, on my way coming back from work, I was robbed and beaten to comma, a good Samaritan guy living close by rescued me after the thief's left but for 3 hours, I was in pains, could not move and was bleeding a little. The guy who helped me was just using warm water to press my body and gave me panadol yet I was still in pain. He had no car to take me to the hospital. We waited for 3 hours until his neighbour arrived from work before I was taken to a nearby hospital. My point here is that, if there is community care hot line we could call that night to help me, I will not hesitate to do so and I will feel blessed been a Nigerian. But the truth is that there is known and it sucks. I support the initiative but it has to be civilized. Am sorry to say but am not too confident in anything Nigerian government does.

Reading other people's comment, I find it very interesting but I have a very crucial question if am keep thinking community care is best for us. Who will be the community carers?

Trained and Qualified nurses and health care assistants. We expect that they will be provided with additional training on how to care in the community at least 6 months before they begin work if this is practice in Nigeria. Medical doctors should be involved too as well as other allied health care practitioners for several cases. The importance of social workers and social care workers can never be over emphasized in community care.

I discovered in UK, women now conveniently give birth to there babies at home with the help of community care nurses. If its incorporated in Nigeria, they will be no need for people to conduct child birth delivery illegally. It will be much safer to have your baby in the comfort of your home.

I strongly believe that community care should be incorporated into Nigeria health care system to better serve the sick with appropriate and accessible health care. This will improve the life span of the citizens in general.
